A Special Thanks to Publix Super Markets
By Angie Matthiessen, Executive Director – United Way Charlotte County
As we continue to work toward brighter futures for individuals and families in our community, there is one partner whose support has truly been a guiding light for more than 40 years: Publix Super Markets. I’ve worked alongside Publix for over 11 years, but more than that, they’re like family to me.
The employees at our local stores don’t just recognize United Way Charlotte County (UWCC)—they know us. Over the years, they’ve asked about our kids, our families, and our work in the community and if you ask them, they pride themselves on knowing ‘you’ also. I bet every Publix employee has one or two or three people they know by name, along with the life story of that person.
Publix supports UWCC not just as a company, but as caring individuals who are deeply connected to the people around them. That’s why I’m especially proud to share that Publix is United Way’s #1 Global Corporate Partner across an eight-state footprint—an extraordinary recognition that speaks to their unwavering commitment to service and generosity.
This year’s Publix campaign theme is “Lighting the Way,” and when we hear that phrase, Publix comes to mind—because of the people behind it. These individuals truly embody the spirit of giving and shine a light through their kindness, generosity, and service.
Recently, our team had the privilege of visiting Publix stores throughout Charlotte County, delivering almost 60 presentations to over 1,000 Publix Associates. These moments weren’t just informational—at times, they were personal. One Associate hugged a member of our staff and shared how UWCC helped them pay rent when they were struggling. Others asked how they could volunteer or get more involved. Many shared personal stories of how UWCC had supported them or someone they loved. These conversations were a powerful reminder that the work we do reaches real people—and these presentations were just as meaningful for our team as they were for the Associates.
We shared how their support helps drive meaningful change across three key areas: Families, Workforce, and Seniors. We tackle critical issues such as health, financial stability, education, and community resilience—whether through funding 18 local partner agencies or operating our own programs. Our mission is to mobilize the power of our community so all can thrive.
We couldn’t do the work we do without them.
The culture of giving back, established by Mr. George Jenkins, the visionary founder of Publix, continues to shine brightly today. His legacy of being a good corporate citizen and fostering a deep connection with the communities Publix serves is evident in the actions of Publix Associates. Their commitment goes far beyond the aisles—it’s a personal investment in the well-being of our neighbors.
As we move forward, I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank your cashiers, bakers, deli staff, meat and seafood Associates, and everyone at Publix for their support of UWCC. Their contributions, no matter the size, are making a real difference in the lives of our neighbors, and together, we are lighting the way for a brighter tomorrow.
Thank you, Publix Associates, for your hard work and generosity. You are beacons of light, helping us lift up those in need. And thank you Publix for being a steadfast partner. We look forward to another year of lighting the way together.
